Interview with Rapper ‘Concept’ from the UK

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Good morning, Good evening, Good hangover

Today, I am sitting with UK Asian Hip-Hop artist: Concept from the up and coming independent record label Shlepp Records. Concept was born and raised in London, and found rapping a way of solving his troubles, as he was constantly getting into fights and hustling. He is now focused on his music, taking the independent urban scene in England by storm, targeting an Asian audience and creating songs such as ‘Million Miles’, and party songs such as ‘T-shirt’ which he has just finished shooting the video for. I sat down with the talented rapper and although he was a bit of a loose cannon… I managed to get some answers:

concept from uk

Taisuke: Wassup Concept , how are you today?

Concept: Ha Ha, JOLLY GOOD.

Taisuke: That’s good to hear. Over here in Singapore, we don’t have much of a clue regarding the urban scene out in the UK..Could you give us some insight from the front line, and hand us 3 words that describe what the urban scene is like out there?

Concept: 3 words ay, hold up my phone ringing..( picks it up..mumbles some gangster words that I cant print in here, hangs up and comes back) ok, ok, 3 words that would describe the urban scene here is: Cold( because it’s Britain), Imitated ( music wise) and Weaker..but there is a minority that create ok music..

Taisuke: I see..well that all seems kind of negative, especially for us in sunny Singapore, If you could lighten up the mood for everybody over there, how would you do it?

Concept: - I would go around handing out Belgium Chocolates..ye belgium

Taisuke: Hmm, good choice.. Ok, now finish these sentences for me:

Taisuke: I would most likely get arrested for:

Concept: Mooning the Queen of England

Taisuke: When I rap I sound like:

Concept: Jesus. haha.. nah just a rapper

Taisuke: Ok, who’s got a better beard, Bin Laden or Santa?

Concept: Santa’s, It keeps growing back

Taisuke: I didn’t know it grows back/got cut off?

Concept: Well he stays way he is forever innit.. so if you cut his beard off it’s gonna come back for more haha

Taisuke: I see..wait let me scratch my head…Ok Ok.
So explain to us your style of Hip-Hop music, what kind of topics do you talk about in your raps?

Concept: I just rap about shit that I been through, shit I’m feeling whether it be about feeling good wit bitches all around me or in a bad mood,. I try to avoid talking about the same shit as everybody else, but if it plays a part in ma story I would mention it

Taisuke: So as far as rappers go, which rap artist would like to kill, and what would be your weapon of choice?

Concept: Ha Ha, err my weapon of choice would be a sword, and the artist would be benzino.

Taisuke: Ha Ha, Ok Concept, thank you for the interview, hope all goes well with the music, Where are you heading next?

Concept: Straight to the studio man, you gotta work hard for it..

Taisuke: Enough said.

Musings on a Complementary Class in “Life Drawing”

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Complementary class, I was fooled into taking something called Life Drawing.

This was during my first year in fine arts. To be specific, the name had me in some serious duped shit.

Oh the ambiguity. It must be still life.

Just in case you didn’t know, still life is an arrangement of things placed nice and pretty upon a table top or some other horizontal surface for your artistic disposal. Upon this usually horizontal surface, the still life sits very very still; Of this people make a painting or a drawing, usually.

Life Drawing…… Still Life Drawing…. Could it be something else other?

Life drawing. It must be a person going through life, sitting very very still for your artistic disposal. Yes!

I was right. In fact I was more than right. I was so right that I must have been 110% right because I imagined this person with clothes.

I went to the life drawing class and greeted the model because I thought he was a lecturer. That is until he appeared in a towel.

So he is sitting around in his towel and you set up your pencils and papers. Look normal. Look more normal than normal. Be extra normal. Usually talking loudly with big ass hand gestures makes you look extra normal.

I was so normal that it hurt.

The boys were drawing the essentials with all their might. This was the only thing they came here for and this was all they would draw.

The girls were opposing this motion. Girls drew everything but the junks. Courageous girls used very basic shapes. My portraits were all half body. Oh the ambiguity.

lifedrawing

I left this class feeling more mature than I’ve ever been. I felt I’ve seen life. Life I’ve never seen before. Life Drawing.

Indie Boy: Intro from Taisuke Yamamoto

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

Indie Music literally means Independent Music. Are you Independent?

Do you need a helping hand to cross the road?

Do you need someone to decide what you’re gonna eat at the restaurant?

Of course not, but its crazy to see music listeners eating anything that’s put on their plate - artistically, creatively & musically.

I hate the Pussycat Dolls. I heard one of them was a lady-boy, not that it makes much difference to their music, I hate Mariah Carey and other pop singers “yo!-yo!-ing” in their crap collaborations with rappers.

I think all of that is as gay as Elton John joining the Bolshoi Ballet.

But I sat in my toilet for a couple minutes and pondered the question “why do I hate all of it?” and I came to the conclusion that these “musicians” people have lost their musical “juice”, that mojo, that energy, which makes everyone who listens to it want to join in for the adventure and dream.

You see it’s all about being Human, be YOURSELF.

It’s about standing on the street trying to sell your CD’s, its forcing people to come to your shows, designing and printing your own flyers.

It’s not about the brand clothes or the rented Porsche car in the MTV video’s and compromising your music so some 14 year old girl can Harlem shake to it in her room!
I’m on the search for the real, the original, the innovative innit. Imma bring you the independent scene of Singapore and beyond, and show you what music is, and what you’ve been missing.

-so make sure you keep in touch like a stalker-
