‘West Grand Boulevard’ of Dreams

Varian: A lot of performers today don’t believe in practicing good performance etiquette (such as cancelling at the last minute, ignoring fans, showing up late for a gig, etc). Do you think this is important or are they (the audience) just overreacting?
Dharma: I guess sometimes we don’t head out to mingle with the audience after shows very often. This may seem counterintuitive being that we’re a band that goes up onstage and performs but we’re actually pretty shy. But we’re always happy if people come and say “hi”. It helps us get over the shy, pre-pubescent awkwardness that is our collective post-gig trademark.
Erik: Where did you read that?
Syed: We believe in being responsible musicians. And we appreciate people that appreciate our craft so that’s a big no-no for us.
Bryan: I personally don’t engage bad etiquette in general and I’d hate to apply that to any other aspect in my life (especially performing what I love) so there’s a definite NO to spitting at fans and appearing late for gigs. Other than that, Dharma couldn’t have said it any better……..yeah, where DID you read that?
Varian: Psych 101 For Bands, I guess? Alright, confession time people. Let’s have them.
Erik: Jude is gay.
Syed: Jude is actually a very soft man.
Dharma: Jude secretly loves listening to Chicago and sings “Will You Still Love Me” when he thinks nobody is listening.
Jude: Dharma did some dark stuff. Really dark stuff. But legal. But dark. In fact it’s so dark, saying it here might kill somebody (ask me at the gig. I’ll tell you).
Varian: Heading in another direction now. If you weren’t already performing as a group, what would you be doing?
Jude: Guitar. Hanging with my friends, going to haunted houses and screaming like 5 year olds. DOTA.
Erik: Working.
Dharma: I suppose I’d watch TV. I haven’t watched the idiot box in years. I dunno, maybe I’d have more time for sex.
Syed: DOTA and sex.
Varian: Pick your dream place for a concert.
Jude: Greenland.
Erik: Japan.
Syed: In the middle of the Sahara to a random Arab man.
Dharma: Madison Square Garden…or on a platform on the ocean. I would play to the creatures…OF THE SEA.
Varian: I sea…. I sea, get it? I see? No? Never mind. Now that we’ve got the readers all excited and eager to form their own band, why not give them some pointers?
Dharma: Practice, practice, practice first. Gig later. Don’t slack off and end up being the example people point at when they tell others, “See? Local music sucks.” Be as good as you can be. If you’re not interested in being your best, don’t bother.
Erik: Playing live is NOTHING like playing in the studio. Always tune your instruments. Never be an ass.
Syed: Humility. No matter how good you get, there will always be some one that’s better than you.
Varian: I couldn’t agree more. How about a last word to the readers and fans?
Dharma: Y’all rule. Seriously.
Jude: MEGA KILL!
Syed: THANK YOU LAH PeOple! You ALl Touch My heart deep Deep. Lub You Like Teh Peng and Ya Kun Kaya Toast.
Varian: Great interview guys and thanks for making time for it! Kudos to all of you.
Dharma: Thank you for having us Varian! We’re excited to be part of Love is Indie Air! For everyone who reads this before the show, please come down to catch some of the most kickass performances this side of Singapore, with bands like Caracal, The Pinholes, Tiramisu, Allura, and Mega Hollytron. See you there!!
And just like that, my second interview was done. I don’t bother to control myself and say out loud to the glowing screen, “It’s a wrap.” I crack my knuckles and prepare for a well-deserved (oh, SO well-deserved) nap. Heh heh, I sea. Sometimes I kill myself.
