House Music In Singapore’s Clubbing Scene
September 1st, 2007
Having gone through my phases of ‘Cheesy Britney Pop’ to ‘RNB Hip-Hop Wannabe’ to ‘Mad Pseudo-Rocker’ , now I am a House Music person. I enjoy good Spontaneous Jazz, some Classic Sinatra & all things Artful in music. In the end you find your musical tastes to be a combination of all your experiences.

But when I look at the scene in Singapore I see so few real talents. The scene is filled with “DJs” who can spin the heck out of a CD and Scratch the grooves out of a Vinyl. But they seem to forget the fact that it is not their ‘Self Proclaimed High Standards of Mixing” that count but to make music that people love to hear is what matters.
I was running Daybed Bar almost a year ago. I had this DJ who could mix anything, he was a pure genius when it came to that. But he was shit. Why?

tru.. tru.. the music is for the drunk men and sober women..If the dj wants to spin all his favourites, he should do it in his basement, DJ-ing is a real job!

Hello… I came across your article about house music in Singapore as I was searching out stuff about Singapore and just want to say .. a—fuckin– men… I don’t get it. I’m from NYC and I’m not trying to be an elitist or anything, but I never could figure out why real house music has rarely made it to clubs and nightspots outside of NYC and Miami and Cali sometimes (without having to seek out the one little place with a decent DJ 1 night a month or some crap like that). I have traveled the states and ther rest of the world, and I have been in the club business as a promoter, and for whatever reason “house” for everyone else seems to mean techno or just beats and stuff and the DJ almost never seems to have a read of the crowd and what they want/need?
In NY and Miami the house music is usually spun in a way that it becomes so universal, the mixing of vocals and beats and drums, funk, etc all into one. It’s done in a way that normal socialite kind of people accept it as part of their main stream. People go out and party and the music adds the dimension that gives a place that would otherwise be just like any other, it’s edge. For most other places I have been, house music is only for a fringe part of the people in the social scene. You say to someone that you like house music, and they automatically think glo sticks and wordless mindless beats. Where I’m from, house music is the backdrop for the most sought after scene by people from I-bankers and lawyers to pizza delivery guys and school teachers (ok well maybe not that many school teachers). So many other places though it is a really weak scene, and a big reason why is that so many people (DJ’s and others) don’t get it and settle for this crap that gets played.
Anyway I just moved to Singapore to work about a week ago and so far I have experienced the same weak DJ experience I have had previously in SEA and other places. I guess I just felt like venting. Anyway if you do know of any decent scene here please give me the heads up, it would be greatly appreciated.
