House Music In Singapore’s Clubbing Scene
September 1st, 2007
When I first entered the clubbing industry I did not understand the dynamics of it. But the fact that one person can control so many people on a dance floor made me curious about it. Its all about the vibe man, the body language. You have to read your audience & play for them, be humble.
When the night starts everybody is not that pissed yet. You need to play uplifting stuff, dont play your extreme beat & beeps only tracks then. Once the crowd is a bit pissed, they will be a bit more recpective & then you can experiment.
The biggest disappoinment with many DJs is the fact that they do not use vocals in their music. When you have a voice in the track , it makes the music more like music & not just some beats looped together by an amateur on fruity-loops. So please play vocals & not just beats.
Hey I am not an expert in this field. Just a clubber who has been in the business and understands what many people want by listening to what they say….
Your music is your personal property. But if you want others to enjoy it, You have to reach out. Cheers

tru.. tru.. the music is for the drunk men and sober women..If the dj wants to spin all his favourites, he should do it in his basement, DJ-ing is a real job!

Hello… I came across your article about house music in Singapore as I was searching out stuff about Singapore and just want to say .. a—fuckin– men… I don’t get it. I’m from NYC and I’m not trying to be an elitist or anything, but I never could figure out why real house music has rarely made it to clubs and nightspots outside of NYC and Miami and Cali sometimes (without having to seek out the one little place with a decent DJ 1 night a month or some crap like that). I have traveled the states and ther rest of the world, and I have been in the club business as a promoter, and for whatever reason “house” for everyone else seems to mean techno or just beats and stuff and the DJ almost never seems to have a read of the crowd and what they want/need?
In NY and Miami the house music is usually spun in a way that it becomes so universal, the mixing of vocals and beats and drums, funk, etc all into one. It’s done in a way that normal socialite kind of people accept it as part of their main stream. People go out and party and the music adds the dimension that gives a place that would otherwise be just like any other, it’s edge. For most other places I have been, house music is only for a fringe part of the people in the social scene. You say to someone that you like house music, and they automatically think glo sticks and wordless mindless beats. Where I’m from, house music is the backdrop for the most sought after scene by people from I-bankers and lawyers to pizza delivery guys and school teachers (ok well maybe not that many school teachers). So many other places though it is a really weak scene, and a big reason why is that so many people (DJ’s and others) don’t get it and settle for this crap that gets played.
Anyway I just moved to Singapore to work about a week ago and so far I have experienced the same weak DJ experience I have had previously in SEA and other places. I guess I just felt like venting. Anyway if you do know of any decent scene here please give me the heads up, it would be greatly appreciated.

This is simple, some djs become famous because people either people love what they produce or either they love what they mix. If you take someone that loves deep house, you give him some justice tracks… he ll hate it whereas i think that justice are the best producers and I would say that they are much better than miguel migs eventhough i like what he does. But that’s my opinion. If you take mylo; his mixes are shit but he produces some really good music. If you take roger sanchez, he produces shit music but he mixes like a god. Each dj had its specialty and style so you can’t generalize like that. Being dj is a job yes but it is also an art and i think people that go in clubs seem to forget that and they don’t realize how hard that job is.
For what about Frank says… sorry but that s bullshit. The best djs are from europe not only from NY… we are more open on music and we think more on the creative side than on the job and duty side when we think of djs.
