‘A is for Andy’ - 20 years after Warhol: An Andy Warhol Exhibition

This year marks the 20 th anniversary of the death of Andy Warhol and in commemoration, an exhibition featuring 119 pieces of the artist’s most unique and iconic works. The entire collection of ‘A is for Andy’ - 20 years after Warhol: An Andy Warhol Exhibition is estimated to be valued in excess of USD 10 million and is the first-ever exhibition of such an impressive magnitude in Singapore. It will include some of Warhol’s most popular screen-prints like Marilyn Monroe, Superman, Mickey Mouse, Campbell Soup and Mao. ‘A is for Andy’ will be held at 72-13 Mohamed Sultan Road (TheatreWorks) from 13 to 18 November 2007, and will be opened to the public on Saturday and Sunday, 17 and 18 November 2007.

Radical and most definitely progressive, Andy Warhol was a central figure in the pop art movement which began in the late 1950s and drew inspiration from the products of popular culture, such as advertising, packaging, comic books, the cinema and television.. Having demonstrated sheer talent in drawing and painting at a young age, Andy Warhol first worked as an illustrator for various high-fashion magazines, including Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. He proceeded to hold his premiere solo gallery exhibition at the mere age of 24, exhibiting Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote.

In less than a decade, Andy Warhol’s status as a media icon had dramatically intensified with his show-stopping style mirroring the euphoric 60s - a world which saw the rise in a mass consumerism culture as consumer goods became more affordable. Warhol captured the universal craving for glamour and glitz in his art and became known internationally as a painter, an avant-garde filmmaker, a record producer, an author and even a public figure. The artist and his art was celebrated for his presence in diverse social circles: from that of bohemian street people to distinguished intellectuals; from Hollywood celebrities to wealthy aristocrats.

Highlights of the exhibition include the eight complete portfolios, such as the $ sign, Mao, Beethoven, Grapes, Camouflage, Shadows 1, Shadows 2, Electric Chairs and the unique set of commissioned works created for the promotional campaigns of the Perrier water and of the Muratti Cigarettes by Philip Morris. This set of commissioned promotional campaigns is near-inimitable as it is representative of Andy Warhol’s desire in producing works that were aesthetically and conceptually complex.

The impact of Andy Warhol is all around us today and his influence is immeasurable. He revolutionised the concept of art by taking it off its pedestal and made it more accessible to people. An opinion leader, a trend-setter and an artist manager who turned art into a mass phenomenon, Warhol believed that art should be made more easily accessible to the person on the street and ‘A is for Andy’ hopes to make his vision a reality.

Limited Edt is Launching the Claw Vandal Hi series at their shop in Heeren on Nov 3 2007.

The series designed by famous street artist Claw Money is Nike’s second collavoration with Claw Money after the Limited Edition Release of Claw Blazer earlier this summer.

The Nike Claw Vandal Hi retains the shine of the first nylon Vandals, but the Nike design team deconstructed the shoe by removing foam from the upper, allowing it to slouch and crinkle. Claw added peacock feathers to the body in reflective ink to achieve a more “couture” look. Old school fat laces keep things from getting too chi-chi.

Nike Vandal
Originally a 1985 hoop shoe, the Nike Vandal was one of the first sneakers to have a full nylon upper. Based on the original Air Force 1, the shiny quilted hi-tops with the Velcro strap became a favorite of breakdancers, who rocked them seamlessly with parachute pants. The shoes famously made an appearance in The Terminator, and it wasn’t long before skaters were also seen abusing Vandals on ramps and sidewalks alike.

Claw Money

Born in Queens, New York, Claw Money started writing graffiti in NYC in the early 1990s and has since sprayed her signature three-nailed claw symbol — based on the letter “W” — in cities around the world. The reigning princess of a male-dominated world (she counts membership in graf crews PMS, TC5 and FC) is also a well-established fashion editor and designer of her self-titled clothing line that is sold in a selection of the world’s best boutiques. Claw is the fashion editor at Swindle magazine and author of her own book Bombshell: the Life and Crimes of Claw Money, which she released this year with powerHouse Books.

This was during my first year in fine arts. To be specific, the name had me in some serious duped shit.

Oh the ambiguity. It must be still life.

Just in case you didn’t know, still life is an arrangement of things placed nice and pretty upon a table top or some other horizontal surface for your artistic disposal. Upon this usually horizontal surface, the still life sits very very still; Of this people make a painting or a drawing, usually.

Life Drawing…… Still Life Drawing…. Could it be something else other?

Life drawing. It must be a person going through life, sitting very very still for your artistic disposal. Yes!

I was right. In fact I was more than right. I was so right that I must have been 110% right because I imagined this person with clothes.

I went to the life drawing class and greeted the model because I thought he was a lecturer. That is until he appeared in a towel.

So he is sitting around in his towel and you set up your pencils and papers. Look normal. Look more normal than normal. Be extra normal. Usually talking loudly with big ass hand gestures makes you look extra normal.

I was so normal that it hurt.

The boys were drawing the essentials with all their might. This was the only thing they came here for and this was all they would draw.

The girls were opposing this motion. Girls drew everything but the junks. Courageous girls used very basic shapes. My portraits were all half body. Oh the ambiguity.

I left this class feeling more mature than I’ve ever been. I felt I’ve seen life. Life I’ve never seen before. Life Drawing.
